Kenning In the loose sense of the word, a poetic circumlocution; in the strict sense of the word, a circumlocution in two parts: a base word that does not fit its context and a determiner that provides the context within which to reinterpret the base word. Examples: sævar hestr “horse of the sea” for “ship”; handar grjót “gravel of the arm” for “gold”.
